Description

Dive into the delicious world of fried apple pies with this step-by-step guide! Discover tips for flaky crust, sweet fillings, and perfect frying techniques.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups diced Granny Smith apples (peeled and cored)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 package (15 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade pie dough)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling:
    • In a medium saucepan, combine diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and butter over medium heat.
    • Cook until the apples are tender, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Stir in the cornstarch-water mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Assemble the Hand Pies:

    • Roll out the pie dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 4-5 inch circles using a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass.
    • Place a spoonful of apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape.
    • Press the edges together with a fork to seal. For a secure seal, you can lightly moisten the edges with water.
  3. Fry the Pies:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
    • Fry the pies in small batches, 2-3 at a time, for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve:

    • Dust the fried pies with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
