Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 egg white (for brushing)
- 1 tbsp water (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat, and cover with a damp towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Mix the egg white with water and brush over the loaf for a shiny crust.
- Use a sharp knife to make a few diagonal slashes on top of the loaf.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
