- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp molasses
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 ½ cups bread flour
- 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp melted butter, for brushing
- Cornmeal, for dusting
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, honey, and molasses. Stir until dissolved, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add bread flour, whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts. Shape each part into a loaf.
- Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and sprinkled with cornmeal.
- Cover the loaves and let them rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the loaves with melted butter.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with butter.
